KCWA Cricket Team History
KYC (Kerala Youth Club) cricket team played their first match in 1983 against a Pakistani team in an unmade pitch. The inspiration was India winning the world cup in 1983. The first team members were Sunny Janardanan, Manilal Raman, Nazir Babu Balakrishnan, Shaji Pillai, Nicki Mathews, Presad Gangadharan, Chandrabose, Murali Pillai, Rajan Sreedharan, Prem lal, and Jyothi Sadasivan, with sadness two of the members had passed away Murali and Jyothi. KCWA was formed from KYC in 1988 as an association and the cricket team actively continued under the new association.
There are a number of players in the current UKMCL teams that had passed through KCWA team during its history. The quality of Cricket changed with the influx of Malaya lee students in 2000’s and we also had a fair share of these great players, Direj, Kevin, Thrombus to name a few from the past and this trend has continues to the present UKMCL with a number of quality and talented players. KCWA were one of the founder members of the UKMCL in 2004 to promote cricket for the malayalee community in UK.
The league has produced an opportunity for lots malayalees to get together and to become friends, the backbone of the KCWA team is our long serving captain Sunny Janardanan and Sajeev Bhanu, to sustain KCWA’s strength it’s important to promote new talent especially from malayalee youngsters and this will be our aim for the future.
